Is midtown really trying to compete with downtown for hipster speakeasy status? Last week the Thursday Styles observed, "The saturation point for speakeasies was breached several years ago, but they continue to sprout up behind taco stands, coffee shops and beauty salons. The latest is JBird, a hidden cocktail bar that opened in August just north of Times Square. While it lacks novelty, it doubles down on absurd inconvenience: guests must navigate a velvet rope shared with a nightclub, a dark hallway, an elevator, another corridor and a bleak staircase humming with ice machines.” Hm. Jury’s out on whether that sounds like the best kitschy after-work fun to be had in midtown, or a really great way to freak someone out on a second date.
