While the excitement of Fashion Week may have eclipsed the opening of
the New York City Ballet’s fall season last week at Lincoln Center,
these prima ballerinas are emerging hot on the heels—or rather toe
shoes—of the fall fashion shows with an amazing lineup, including
performances of Balanchine Black & White. However, the real ballet
news is Sir Paul McCartney’s "Ocean’s Kingdom,” which premieres
tonight at the company’s fall gala. This is the ex-Beatles’ first-ever
ballet, which was choreographed by the NYCB’s master in chief Peter
Martins for a cast of about 40 dancers. (It’s big enough news that
even Rolling Stone was reporting on the eagerly anticipated ballet
earlier this year—call it the "Black Swan” effect.) McCartney told the
Times that the work is "basically a romantic story” about a couple
from opposite worlds—an ocean kingdom, which represents purity, and an
earth kingdom, which represents darkness and evil. (Hm, anyone else
hearing, "Part of Your World” running through their head right now?)
If you’re not on the list for tonight’s gala, there will be four more
performances in September and five in January 2012.
