THE "BRAQUE" PACK

October 17, 2011

Pop over to the Acquavella Galleries on East 79th Street for the first major Georges Braque exhibit since the Guggenheim’s seminal installation more than two decades ago in 1988. Curated by Dieter Buchhart, "Georges Braque: Pioneer of Modernism,” opened just last Wednesday and runs through November 30, featuring more than 40 major paintings and papiers collés on loan from collections around the world. Explains Acquavella, Braque was best known as "the co-founder of Cubism with Pablo Picasso and as the inventor of the papier collé technique.” However, fans of Woody Allen might better recognize his name from "Midnight in Paris.” According to the fictionalized story line the film’s central art groupie, Adriana, was Braque’s lover before moving on to Picasso. At least part of this is true, "as a young man, Braque was a leading member of the Fauves, together with Henri Matisse, André Dérain, and Maurice de Vlaminck, and [collaborated with Picasso for six years].” Kind of like the Brat Pack of 1920s Paris.
