For Jens Lekman fans, hearing "Your Arms Around Me” featured in Drew Barrymore’s roller derby movie "Whip It” was a victory lap of sorts. In fact, one might even say the big screen is where his songs belong to begin with. There’s a cinematic quality in the way he uses a pop song to tell a story—almost like an Ingmar Bergman flick infused with a Woody Allen sensibility. This Swedish crooner’s "deadpan style of singing, sunny melodies, and wittily lovelorn” (as succinctly described by Pitchfork) is laced with a cerebral sense of whimsy that has garnered him comparisons to David Byrne. Producing playful, yet beautiful lyrics that blur the line between sweet nothings and humorous one liners, a classic Lekman verse is "But I would never kiss anyone who doesn’t burn me like the sun and I remember every kiss like my first kiss.” Lekman is in town to play the Williamsburg Hall of Music tonight, Sunday, and Monday (they had to add Monday because the demand for tickets was so high!). No matter if you’re a hopeless—or hopeful—romantic, you’ll fall for Jens. He’ll have you with the first kiss.
